I ordered the rigatoni with the Vodka sauce and I was pleasantly surprised! The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was really flavorful. Will definitely be back!! (It tastes better than it looks lol)

We wanted to branch out and try a different Italian restaurant to order for delivery. We deeply regret having chosen Cucina Al Volo. The quality of the entrees was on par with (poorly) mass prepared cafeteria food. Edible, but not appetizing and not worth the price. We ordered the cacio e pepe with chicken and the duck ragu. Both were edible, but not appealing. After a few bites, we quickly placed a new dinner order from another restaurant. Writing this review as I wait for it to arrive, confident that it will actually be a pleasant dining experience unlike the food we got from Cucina Al Volo that sadly will be thrown away.

So y’all know I started a new segment where I’m going to DC’s worst rated spots right? Well there’s a spot in Union Market that’s rated 2.9 stars, for food, & customer service. Could be true, or not!! Let’s find out!!
.
Where I am: Cucina Al Volo
.
Location Reviewed: 1309 5th St., N.E. Washington D.C. inside of @unionmarketdc
.
Menu Includes:
Pastas-Rigatoni, Fettuccine , Spaghetti, Ravioli, Meatballs, Chicken, Shrimp, Spinach, Subs, Salads, & Beverages.
.
Items Reviewed:
Their Spaghetti & Meatballs (with parmesan cheese on top $12.50). PASS. I needed some more flavor in this. Salt, oregano…something. Thick pasty noodles, unseasoned meatballs, bland. I wanted this to be better.

Their Chicken Parmesan Sub (with breaded chicken tenders, marinara, & mozzarella cheese, on a toasted roll $13.50). DECENT. The ingredients were there. Again I just needed some more flavor. This was bland, but edible.

The San Pellegrino Limonata ($2.50). STAMP!! Always flavorful!!
.
Customer Service: Pass. When I got to the register to order food nobody said hello, how can I help you…anything. They were definitely busy back there, and they did say thank you once I got my food.

Online Navigation: Easy
.
Parking: Rough, Lot Parking/Metered Street

My all time favorite place to eat in union market! Great pasta that they make fresh! I get the rigatoni noodles with red sauce and add some pesto. I add chicken and mushrooms. It’s always a hit. One time the noodles did taste me stale and I took the pasta back and kinda got an attitude. Uhm why are you mad at me because your noodles are stale? But definitely way more food experiences that bad.

The lady who normally works the register could definitely be friendlier. I often feel like she has an attitude but ignore it because I’m not there for her I’m there for the pasta. But that’s why it’s not five stars.

Honestly absolutely terrible. I ordered the ravioli burrata with tomato mushroom sauce and garlic bread. It was disgusting. The pasta was undercooked and cold, and the sauce was extremely watery. It looked like ravioli soup. The garlic bread was better than the pasta but still terrible. And they charged me $30 for this garbage and made me wait like 20 min to get my somehow cold food.

With so many delicious food options at Union Market, avoid this place like the plague.

Ordered a chicken carbonara pasta dish (charged like $12 just for the carbonara sauce) and it was the worst pasta I’ve had. The sauce was very watery and flavorless, it was evident the pasta was cooked unsalted, I’m pretty sure that the chicken was boiled due to the weird a weird chewy texture (and it was also flavorless). Maybe it was the cook of that day (Monday, July 25th, at 2PM), but I can’t recommend this place. The only thing I could eat was the pancetta from the sauce because it’s pretty difficult to mess up pancetta. Total waste of food and waste of time, horrible experience.

All in all I’m disappointed in the carbonara I recently had. The flavors were decent but the dish lacked that creamy element you normally get with a good carbonara. Also it could’ve used a bit more pork. For $21.50 I expected something better

For gluten free folks: when asked I was told they do have GF options but they’re cooked in the same water so keep that in mind
